RewardsThings people actually want, not branded drink bottles
Redemption is where most programs lose people. If the catalogue is full of merchandise nobody asked for, the points may as well not exist.
What points convert to
Digital rewards are delivered instantly. Everyday discounts need no points at all and are available from the first login.
Digital gift cards
Over forty Australian retailers. Delivered to the app immediately, no postage, no waiting for a card in the mail.
From 500 ptsGroceries and fuel
The two categories redeemed most often, by a wide margin. Useful every week rather than once a year.
From 1,000 ptsHome and hardware
Larger denominations for people saving points toward something specific rather than spending as they go.
From 2,500 ptsDining and experiences
Restaurant cards, cinema, and activity vouchers. Popular for milestone recognition rather than everyday earning.
From 2,000 ptsWellbeing and fitness
Gym passes, sportswear and health retailers. Often paired with an employer wellbeing budget rather than earned points.
From 1,500 ptsEveryday discounts
Ongoing savings on groceries, fuel, insurance and phone plans. No points required — this is what gets people opening the app in week one.
No points neededPhysical rewards
A small, deliberately curated catalogue. Small because a large one is how programs end up full of things nobody chooses.
From 5,000 ptsCharitable donation
Convert points to a donation to a registered Australian charity. Low volume, but the people who use it care that it exists.
Any amountHow the points maths works
One hundred points equals one dollar of redemption value. It is a deliberately boring ratio, because the alternative — a conversion rate nobody can do in their head — is how staff end up feeling short-changed without being able to say why.
| Points | Value | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | $2.50 | A single peer recognition |
| 1,000 | $10 | Small incentive, or four kudos |
| 2,500 | $25 | Supermarket card |
| 5,000 | $50 | A month of steady earning |
| 10,000 | $100 | Milestone or service anniversary |
Expiry, plainly
Points do not expire while someone is employed and the program is active. There is no quarterly reset and no use-it-or-lose-it deadline.
Two situations where points do lapse, and both are stated in the program terms rather than buried in an email: when a person leaves the organisation, and when an employer ends the program. In both cases there is a redemption window before the balance closes.
A points balance that quietly expires is worse than no program at all. It teaches people the whole thing was never real.
What is not in the catalogue
- Cash. Points are not convertible to cash or paid through payroll.
- Alcohol and tobacco. Excluded across the whole catalogue.
- Gambling. Excluded.
- Anything that needs a delivery address the employer holds. Physical rewards ship to an address the staff member enters themselves.
Tax
Non-cash benefits provided to employees can have fringe benefits tax implications for the employer depending on how the program is structured and what is redeemed. We can explain how other clients have set theirs up, but the treatment for your organisation is a question for your accountant, not for us.
